Alpaca fiber is hypo-allergenic.   Meaning  people with wool sensitivities can wear it.  Alpaca is a hollow core fiber so it keeps you warmer than wool when you need to be warm, but breathes to keep you cool.  Alpaca fiber can be as fine as cashmere.

                                                              Yarn Weights

Yarn can be supplied in various weights (thicknesses). There are several methods of measuring yarn weights, but the most unambiguous is WPI or Wraps Per Inch. The WPI is determined by wrapping the yarn around a ruler in adjacent wraps as close as possible without overlapping strands.

Lace Weight is the thinnest weight yarn with 22 to 26 WPI. It typically is used with a number 0 knitting needle, and typically yields 2300 to 3600 yards per pound. When knitted, it typically has a gauge of 7 to 8 stitches per inch.

Fingering Weight averages 19 to 22 WPI. It typically is used with a number 1 to 3 knitting needle, and typically yields 1800 to 2200 yards per pound. When knitted, it typically has a gauge of 6.75 to 7.5 stitches per inch.

Sport Weight averages 14 to 19 WPI. It typically is used with a number 3 to 5 knitting needle, and typically yields 1200 to 1700yards per pound. When knitted, it typically has a gauge of 5.75 to 6.5 stitches per inch.

Bulky Weight averages 6 to 8 WPI. It typically is used with a number 9 to 11 knitting needle, and typically yields 500 to 800 yards per pound. When knitted, it typically has a gauge of 2 to 3.5 stitches per inch.
